Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway

What is it?

Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway is a scalable, cost-effective solution that fully integrates with open-source software telephony engines like Asterisk®, while providing the reliability of an embedded proprietary SS7 stack. Sangoma's SS7 Media Gateway is the lowest-priced, stable, production-ready solution on the market. It runs on Sangoma's premium telephony hardware, which has a reputation for superior voice quality. What problems does it solve?

The Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway empowers Sangoma's premium line of telephony cards to act as a VoIP to SS7 Gateway. It enables SS7 signals to communicate with protocols like SIP, IAX, H.323 and SIP/T.38.

The Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway also acts as an SS7 to ISDN Converter to convert PRI or BRI to SS7 for PSTN access and enables an SS7 IVR to be built on top of SS7 TDM Lines.

Sangoma SS7 is a:

  • VoIP to SS7 Gateway (So an SS7 link can talk to your VoIP system)
  • SS7 to ISDN Converter (So SS7 links can communicate with PRI or BRI for PSTN Access)
  • SS7 IVR

When might one consider moving to Sangoma's SS7 Media Gateway Solution?

In short, usually, your customers will tell you. SS7 Media Gateway is a professional solution for high-end applications.

When your customers have outgrown their PRI solution, they may be considering an SS7 link to scale their business up to the next level. Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway is in use in small to mid-size Telcos and CLECs in countries around the world. An SS7 link can scale to upwards of 7000 simultaneous calls.

Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway: The Best Choice

  • High quality hardware for superior voice quality
  • Low failure rate means a reliable production-ready solution
  • Professional installation means a more efficient set up
  • Mandatory Maintenance agreement ensures that the software is fully supported
  • Upgradeable and scalable solution, because it must work and continue to work as you need it

Because Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway is a distributed solution, it is not "tied" to Asterisk®. It simply leverages the power of Asterisk® and similar open Telephony Engines, like CallWeaver to handle things, such as call control, dial plans, IVR, Call Data Record logging, etc. Because it works with open source solutions, the system is exceedingly flexible.

With Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway the servers communicate via IP/Ethernet, so Asterisk® can run on a separate server and maximize system resources and ultimately boost the volume of calls that the Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway system can handle.

The Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway can be purchased to work in a number of models:

A single "box" model
The complete solution is installed in one server. This solution is appropriate in systems where transcoding is not required.

  • One server of your choice that meets the minimum technical requirements
  • Up to two Sangoma digital voice and data cards of your choice, PCI or PCIe as required. Hardware Echo Cancellation Option Recommended. Choose from:
    • A101 Series - Single Port T1/E1
    • A102 Series - Two port T1/E1
    • A104 Series - Four port T1/E1
    • A108 Series - Eight port T1/E1
    • A500 Series - Scalable two to twenty four port BRI
  • Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway Software comprised of:
    • ss7box MTP3 (low level) call control
    • ss7boost-ISUP call control (Q.931), and
    • Sangoma Signaling and Media Gateway Daemon
  • Asterisk®

A dual "box" model
Asterisk® is installed in one box and the rest of the solution is installed in another. This can accommodate up to 16 E1 lines and transcoding because the telephony engine (Asterisk® or CallWeaver) is running on a separate machine.

  • Two servers of your choice that meets the minimum technical requirements
  • Up to two Sangoma digital voice and data cards of your choice, PCI or PCIe as required. Hardware Echo Cancellation Option Recommended. Choose from:
    • A101 Series - Single Port T1/E1
    • A102 Series - Two port T1/E1
    • A104 Series - Four port T1/E1
    • A108 Series - Eight port T1/E1
    • A500 Series - Scalable two to twenty four port BRI
  • Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway Software comprised of:
    • ss7box MTP3 (low level) call control
    • ss7boost-ISUP call control (Q.931), and
    • Sangoma Signaling and Media Gateway Daemon
  • Asterisk®

A Clustering Solution/Distributed Model
Although all solutions can be upgraded to this model, this solution is recommended for the ultimate in scalability when the ability to scale is a known requirement at the initial install. In this solution, the Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway Software is divided between two separate servers with Asterisk® running on a third server.

  • Server A: Asterisk® or similar telephony engine
  • Server B: Sangoma Media Gateway Daemon + ss7boost Call Control + Sangoma Hardware
  • Server C: ss7box

To scale the solution, simply add more servers. Adding additional Servers, like A and B, will scale the number of calls, and the single Server C, housing ss7box will continue to handle the call routing.

How to buy it?

Buy the software and annual maintenance agreement, plus the Sangoma hardware. As long as you have your own servers that meet the minimum technical requirements, you're set to go.

  • Buy a Sangoma SS7 Media Gateway Software License for the first server and additional licenses for each additional server as required.
  • Buy a Mandatory Annual Maintenance Contract. This covers switch debugging, priority access to new releases, update installation and configuration, plus one-on-one real-time assistance.
  • Buy the hardware you need from Sangoma.
  • Use your own servers (that meet the minimum technical requirements).
